The Girls' Choir

St John's Choir practising

The Girls Choir was formed in 2010, offering a fantastic musical opportunity to girls aged 7 to 18.

The Girl Choristers rehearse on a Thursday and Friday during term time and take a turn in singing at Sunday services. On some occasions, the Thursday rehearsal is followed by a short service of Choral Evensong.

Studies have proved that regular singing can help children in their mental, behavioural and even physical development. Girls receive an invaluable musical education, singing a wide variety of music to a high standard. From time to time, the Girl Choristers participate in concerts, broadcasts and recordings. The choir also tours on an annual basis either abroad or within the United Kingdom.

In recognition for their sustained commitment during the term, Girl Choristers are each given ‘pocket money’. The girls also receive payment from singing at weddings.

The choir is a sociable and friendly group and new members are always made to feel welcome. There is a Choir Club offering Choristers the opportunity to know each other. And other occasional social outings have included trips to Alton Towers. Parents and guardians are also made to feel welcome and have the opportunity of participating in wider church activities if they wish to do so.

Following school, previous choristers at St John’s have gone on to sing as Choral Scholars at Oxford and Cambridge and others have studied at music college. Whatever girls do in later life, we hope that they can draw upon and treasure their time as choristers.
